The Past Perfect Continuous tense is used to describe actions that were happening over a period of time before another event in the past. It is formed with "had been" + verb-ing. For example:
She had been studying for hours before the exam started.
As we need to specify a point of reference in the past, we are often going to use this tense along with the Past Simple.
